Reddit , the pop community social medium platform will soon introduce a paid subreddit . CEO Steve Huffman has revealed that the social media platform is influence on locking content behind a paywall .

In a recentAMA(Ask Me Anything ) video , Huffman answered questions about plan to monetize the platform . He confirmed that the societal sensitive platform is working on a pay subreddit system in 2025 .

Huffman said “ It ’s a work in onward motion right now so that one ’s coming . We ’re work out on it as we verbalise . ” According to Huffman , existing subreddits wo n’t be lock up behind a paywall , instead , the fellowship will present paid subreddits with exclusive subject matter or private clobber .

Paid Subreddit coming to Reddit this year

It is a major churning point for a weapons platform that has remained free since its inception in 2005 . However , the society does have a subscription known as Reddit Gold that leave an advertising - free experience . Its radius / Lounge community is exclusively specify to pay user with Reddit Gold .

But Huffman has clearly stated that despite the introduction of a pay off subreddit , free content will “ continue to live and grow and thrive” . give the majority of the drug user do n’t have Reddit Gold , the company can not risk alienating its free substance abuser base .

While Huffman has clarified that live subreddits wo n’t be locked behind a paywall , there are no contingent on the user who will be capable to access them . Will it be only exclusive to Reddit Gold users ? Do you want to purchase a subscription for each pay subreddit ? Who will decide the price of this subscription – the mods or the Reddit team ? How will user in a paid subreddit be reward for creating capacity ?

Even if we get the answer to these query , the chief question remains : Are you uncoerced to pay to access paywalled content on Reddit ? If not then what if half of the members of the subreddit make an alternate subreddit to offer the same content for free ?

The company ’s past decisions have n’t exactly been widely favored by the community . From the gain in API fees to the closure of third - party apps like Apollo and Boost , Reddit has faced a fate of repercussion for its brash decision . Since the company ’s IPO last year , there has been increase pressure level to monetize the platform and increase shareholder note value .
