Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff was literally chuckling when talkingto CNBC from Davosabout the Modern rift in Microsoft ’s kinship with OpenAI . As part of OpenAI ’s program to team up up with SoftBank and Oracle on a $ 500 billion information snapper project call Stargate , Microsoftis no longer the exclusive cloud supplier for OpenAI .
“ I think it ’s highly important that OpenAI gets to other political platform quickly because Microsoft is building their own AI and I do n’t cerebrate Microsoft will use OpenAI in the future . They ’ll have their own frontier models , ” Benioff predicted , laughing . “ That ’s why they hire Mustafa Suleyman . And Mustafa Suleyman and Sam Altman are not best friend . ”
Benioff said their dislike was visible at the year - ago Davos show , “ where Sam and Mustafa were on panels together and not getting along . ”
The end of Microsoft exclusively host OpenAI was destined to happen . Microsoft induct $ 1 billion in OpenAIin 2019 — year before OpenAI released ChatGPT at the close of 2022 . Now , OpenAI look bound for its own technical school hulk condition , perhaps one daytime to rival Microsoft . OpenAI has alsoblameda deficiency of available compute for Cartesian product delays , indicating it want more data point center capability than Microsoft can ( or perhaps desire to ) offer . And OpenAI ’s exclusive agreement with Microsoft was to stop whenever OpenAI accomplish whatthey both agreed was AGI .
Some reports indicate tension between the two companies has been building since at least mid-2023 , after OpenAI released its own , contend enterprise product . After Altman was burn down andreinstated as OpenAI CEOin late 2023 , employee from both companies toldBusiness Insiderthey really do n’t care working together . OpenAI ’s folk tended to look down on those at Microsoft , some employees said .
Just a few month later on , in early 2024 , Nadella thumbed his nozzle back by hiring DeepMind and Inflection co - founder Mustafa Suleyman to lead Microsoft AI . ( Microsoft has not yet answer to our postulation for input . )
While Benioff may hope that Microsoft will fully give up OpenAI in the future , that could be wishful thinking , although Microsoft isreportedlyworking on its own LLM predict MAI-1 . Still , when Microsoftannouncedearlier this calendar month a novel AI group led by Jay Parikh that will work up AI agents and apps , the mail did n’t even refer OpenAI .

This previous fissure in the partnership is in effect news for Benioff . Salesforce alsouses OpenAI ’s enterprise models , and isan investorin OpenAI rival Anthropic .
Even so , Benioff ’s observations about Suleyman are n’t completely off . Suleyman has been known to brush aside Altman ’s visual sense peculiarly around AGI , and admit last month in an interview withThe Vergethat the OpenAI partnership has “ lilliputian tension here and there . ”
