Climate variety might be the most significant environmental calamity facing humanity , but it ’s not the only one . In fact , human race already facesfive othersout of a totality of nine possible doomsday scenarios . With each line of business we cross , we jeopardize the planet ’s ability to ego - regulate .

This concept of world-wide bound is helpful for scientists , but less so for everyone else . wrap up your nous around one existential crisis at a time is challenge enough . Navigating six others , from biodiversity release to microplastics ? Might as well give up , correct ?

Not so tight , Christophe Girardier told TechCrunch . His startup , Glimpact , has anew app called MyGlimpactthat he hop will help people interpret not just the extent of their environmental footprint , but also why they should n’t feel guilty about it .

The estimate was to “ give citizen a vision of the reality of the state of the environmental crisis , which is not only climate change , but which is systemic , ” Girardier said . “ The veridical cause of the environmental crisis is partially citizens , but not entirely . The first duty falls on the land , the political decision - makers and the caller . ”

The free app , which does not require an account to use , question you about your modus vivendi . Questions range from how you commute to what you feed , how you fire up and chill your home , and how many clothes you buy in a typical year . There are two itinerary to follow : you may answer a smattering of bare questions per category and allow the app to assume certain things to fill in the detail , or you may choose to reply more detailed interrogation that leave less way for guessing .

The MyGlimpact app then takes that data and runs it through the company ’s cloud - found software , which assesses a mortal ’s impact in each of 16 categories .

There , on the back end , it performs essentially the same identification number - grind that Glimpact provides to major corporations , which use the outcome to complete environmental reports require by various governments and regulators . On the front end , the result in the app are simplified for the layperson , who is say how many globe - equivalents are need to support their lifestyles . TechCrunch was exclusively given rise access to the app before it launched on Thursday .

If anything , the app reinforced to me just how much environmental impact is baked into the guild and economy in which I live . I ’ve spend much of the last decennary attempting to make my lifestyle as environmentally well-disposed as possible . We drive electric vehicles , and our commute are essentially nonexistent . We take passage when possible , and we eat sum sparingly . Our home base has slurred , to a great extent insulated walls , and our heating and cooling is handled by a high-pitched - efficiency heat heart . After all that , I ’ve only just managed to squeak under three ground .

The approximation of an environmental footmark , not just a atomic number 6 footprint , hasbeen around for a while . MyGlimpact aim the thought and puddle it more personal . The app could stand to guide substance abuser a bit more about how to commute their lifestyles and how to encourage politicians and corporations to exchange . But for a first reading , it ’s a sinewy tool for anyone hop to read their place in the man .
