Earlier this year , GitLabunveiledDuo , a set of AI feature article that draw a bead on to help developer be more productive by summarizing topic and generating descriptions of epics and issues , as well as through code hypnotism andvulnerability explanation , among other features . Today , the company supply Duo Chat to this card , a ChatGPT - like experience that admit developer to interact with the bot to enter the existing duet features , but in a more interactive experience . Duo Chat is now in beta .
During an interview at KubeCon earlier this week , David DeSanto , GitLab ’s Chief Product Officer , told me that the idea here is to move many of the exist Duo capabilities into confabulation between this first genus Beta and the GA launching .
DeSanto , who is increasingly becoming the public face of the company , also noted that GitLab move its Old World chat backend to Anthropic’sClaude . That may come as a mo of a surprise , yield that GitLab partnered with Google for other AI features , including its code windup service . “ We had not select [ a model ] for chat , ” DeSanto told me . “ We were using our own model — an open source model — and we specify that based on the means chat mold within GitLab and the large context that ’s need , a 100k context window makes it a mess wanton to get better information in and back . ”
He also observe that GitLab is partnering with Oracle for swarm - ground GPUs . “ We ’re cloud - agnostical . We ’re choke to find out the safe and all three of them [ Google , Oracle and Anthropic ] actually work with each other through us , so it ’s been a right relationship .
Right now , in addition to more general code - associate chat capabilities , feature like ‘ explicate this computer code ’ and code refactoring are available in Duo Chat . examination vitrine genesis , vulnerability account and other features will follow soon .
DeSanto noted that over the course of testing these characteristic , it became increasingly clear how crucial context of use is for getting the best results in this schmooze experience . One advantage GitLab has over some other player in this champaign is that it can access all of your computer code , even if it ’s not currently overt in the IDE . In plus , these larger circumstance windows make it easier to keep rails of premature conversations .
One interesting observation the team had while watching developers utilize the creature during the closed prevue period was that experienced developers do n’t always love code suggestions because they can become noisy . Instead , they prefer to access these AI tools through Duo Chat .

“ I thought that Old World chat would be a sight more for associated developers but it seems like they require the inline computer code completion — and then senior developer gravitate more to encipher generation in chat , ” DeSanto said . “ The rationality was haphazardness . They tell : I know what I ’m type . I do n’t require you to tell me . But they do possibly want some steering or some refactoring , for example . ”
