UC Berkeley spinoutAmbi Roboticsannounced Tuesday the arriver ofAmbiStack , a novel system that automates pallet packing .
The system features an industrial robotic branch mounted above a conveyer belt belt that moves along the X and Y axes and rhytidectomy boxes up via suction cups mounted to a gripper . Once lifted from the conveyor belt swath , the boxes are tightly packed into pallet , which are used to ship or stock packages .
The AmbiStack is celebrated because it combines two fundamental warehouse operations into a single work flow , by both picking and stacking . Both are clip - consuming and have been known tocause injuryamong human worker . Earlier solution , such as forklifts , have introducedtheir own accidental injury riskinto the workplace . AmbiStack , meanwhile , in effect take away the human doer at these key stage of the logistics process .
Ambi ’s solution focus on both the hardware and software sides of the equation . AmbiStack ’s AI offering was trained on more than 200,000 hours of warehouse data , according to the company . That arena experience helps the arrangement analyse , track , pickaxe , and put a sort of package sizes .
Presales have already open for the young system , with the first deployments expect to arrive in mid-2025 . Ambi also plans to expand its own fabrication processes in early-2026 to meet requirement .
Ambiwas founded in 2018 by UC Berkeley students and lead robotics prof , Ken Goldberg . The firm ’s early solution , theAmbiSort A - Series , manoeuver in a similar manner , albeit with smaller piece of land packages , which are assort into bins . That process requires importantly less precision than stacking . TheAmbiSort B - Serieswas released in 2023 with the power to wield as many as 1,200 sorts in an hour .
Ambi ’s AI - driven system have helped the robotics startup bring in more than$67 million in fundingfrom investors like Tiger Global and Bow Capital . high-pitched - visibility shipping service have deploy Ambi ’s Systems , include Pitney Bowes , which signed a $ 23 millionexpansion dealwith the firm in 2022 .

Ambi is one of a large phone number of warehouse / fulfilment robotics house that greatly benefit from the COVID-19 pandemic . Initial closure led many logistics society to invest in automation . A continuing battle to staff those roles in the intervening years has uphold such interest .
Of course , these opportunities mean that Ambi is far from alone in the place . Among its competitors are Pickle , Righthand , and Hai Robotics , along with Covariant , which was co - set up by Pieter Abbeel , another UC Berkeley robotics professor . That technology hassince been integratedinto Amazon ’s automated systems . Hyundai - owned Boston Dynamics has entered the outer space , as well , with its second commercial robot , Stretch .
