At today’sDelivering the Future event , Amazonannouncedthat it will begin test Agility ’s bipedal golem Digit in its facilities . Amazon Robotics Chief Technologist Tye Brady say the examination is in its “ very , very former stages , ” tally , “ We ’re accept a lot of care to understand it better and see if there ’s a fit for our processes . ”
Reading between the railway line here , there ’s no guarantee that Amazon will really begin deploy Digit to its warehouse facilities , which currently employ Frederick North of 750,000 robot systems .
The geographic expedition is n’t a bad surprisal . Last April , the retail goliath announceda $ 1 billion “ Industrial Innovation ” investment firm . nimbleness was one of an initial round of five firms receiving a stinger of that investment . The list also include Mantis Robotics , Modjoul and Vimaan .
Amazon has long insisted that its investing in these companies does n’t direct to any spacious integrations with the technologies , but the company has often used these sorts of funds to search partnerships and even acquisitions .
Agility is one of a issue of startups building two-footed / humanoid automaton for storage warehouse work . The theory posits that humans build workplaces around ourselves , so why not build robots that can operate in those spaces . Agility is , however , well forward of the contest here in terms of development and production .
“ Digit can move , grasp , and deal item in spaces and corners of warehouses in novel ways , ” Amazon drop a line . “ Its size and shape are well suitable for buildings that are design for humans , and we believe that there is a big chance to scale a mobile operator solution , such as Digit , which can work out collaboratively with employees . Our initial use for this applied science will be to help employee with tote recycling , a highly repetitive process of picking up and moving empty tote bag once inventory has been completely pick out of them . ”
In September , the company announced that it is ramp up product in a serious way with the addition of RoboFab , a factory place in Salem , Oregon that it says will be adequate to of churn out more than 10,000 robots a year when fully in operation .
